I became fascinated by the horse carriage industry in NYC because of a walk in Hudson Yards where I noticed (first by smell) an out-of-place, unassuming horse stable. Its place between modern, silvery skyscrapers was intriguing, yet what perplexed me the most was the fact that a“gentleman’s club” was literally next door to the stable.

NYC is full of kooky juxtapositions but this one stuck with me. I looked up the stable on Google Maps, checked out the Google Reviews, and was captivated by the many enraged one star reviews ★. But, sprinkled between them, was a handful of gushing five star reviews ★ ★ ★ ★ ★.‍ ‍I collected some of them and printed them alongside images of vintage playboy girls and horses from Marlboro ads.

Google Reviews have a masturbatory nature in their own right, but beyond that, I felt a strong connection between these reviews about animal labor and people’s perception of sex work and women’s bodies.

This unique, metropolitan stable/strip club combo filled me with questions… When is labor empowering versus degrading? How do we support workers who are affected by dying industries? How should the law be involved in sex work? How have horses and women’s bodies been compared, exploited, or celebrated throughout history? How is sensationalism in the media affecting our critical thinking skills? How is voyeurism and comment culture affecting behavior???? ?!?!?! ???
